Formulating The Thesis Statement

Some of these theories are more likely to be valid than others. If written properly, your thesis can act as a “roadmap” for your paper, where each main idea presented in your thesis essentially becomes the topic of your body paragraph.A thesis statement clearly identifies the topic being discussed, it should only cover what is being discussed in the paper, and is written for a specific audience.

Remember that the thesis statement is a kind of "mapping tool" that helps you organize your ideas, and it helps your reader follow your argument.

After the topic sentence, include any evidence in this body paragraph, such as a quotation, statistic, or data point, that supports this first point. Show the reader how this entire paragraph connects back to the thesis statement.

For your thesis statement, try to make your topic as specific as possible.

A good thesis statement acknowledges that there is always another side to the argument.

Use it to generate interest in your topic and encourage your audience to continue reading.

Your readers—especially your instructors—want to read writing that engages them.

Instead of summarizing the points you just made, tell the reader how everything fits together.

Explain the importance of your topic or the information you just presented.

Consequently, you must write thesis statements that are arguable, not factual.

Statements of fact seem easy to write about because, well, they are easy to prove. The problem is that you cannot write engaging papers around statements of fact.
