To help initiate them into the profession, we offer a series of panels and workshops designed to address practical issues that lie outside the scope of the writing workshop.Our faculty members consider it a privilege to teach in such a community, and our invitation to successful candidates to join our MFA community is an equal privilege and should be regarded as such.
The length requirement for the Honors project is as follows: poetry, 10-15 pages; fiction or creative nonfiction, 20-30 pages.
A mixed-genre project would require the approval of the faculty member who serves as the Honors project director.
For undergraduate students, we offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, as well as minors in poetry writing and in creative nonfiction writing to students in other majors.
Our BFA offers sought-after credentials in writing and publishing to undergraduates with a wide range of career interests.
The Certificate in Publishing is available to interested students who have been admitted to the full BFA major.
For students interested in pursuing careers in book or journal publishing, or graduate school in a related field, the Certificate in Publishing enhances professional credentials.This academic component will be negotiated between the student and the Honors project director, with oversight by the Honors Scholars Program.The Honors Project will be completed over three two-credit-hour semesters or two three-credit-hour semesters, for a total of six hours of credit through CRW 499.In addition to the application materials submitted online (manuscript, essay, and recommenders' email addresses), you will need to mail to the Graduate School your transcripts.Integral to the Department of Creative Writing, The Publishing Laboratory incorporates into the apprenticeship of creative writers an applied learning experience in the process by which literary manuscripts, including their own, are designed, shaped, and edited into books and published to a wide audience of readers.Our curriculum combines workshops in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction writing with courses in literature, hybrid genres, and special topics.We also offer a Certificate in Publishing to BFA students, and make available classes in editing, book design, and other publishing topics through our Publishing Laboratory, and in screenwriting through the Department of Film Studies (though we do not offer the BFA degree in screenwriting).I gained valuable teaching experience, served as managing editor of Ecotone, and relished my time with mentors who encouraged and challenged me. —Jay Varner, MFA nonfiction '07, author of Nothing Left to Burn The MFA at UNCW is a 48-hour apprenticeship, requiring a total of 21 hours of writing workshops, 21 hours of literature or other elective courses, and 6 thesis hours, leading to completion and defense of a substantial book-length manuscript of literary merit and publishable quality.While students apply in and focus primarily on one genre, cross-genre study is encouraged.The certificate is an optional program that requires completion of four or more courses, for a minimum of 12 credit hours, as follows: To receive permission to enroll in CRW 460: Publishing Practicum, students must have been admitted to the BFA major and Publishing Certificate Program and must have completed all three of the preliminary publishing courses-CRW 321, CRW 322, and CRW 323.If you have questions about the Publishing Certificate, contact Emily Smith, Director of the Publishing Laboratory: [email protected]
